Are first basemen doing more to put runs on the board today than they did 10 years ago? How about 25 years ago? How do you make broad comparisons like this?

With any question like this you can get hung up on the differences between eras. Run-scoring environments are going to bounce around as a matter of course, and that’s before you get into the bump of the so-called "Steroids Era." If you were a fan just getting started in the late ’90s, chances are you might wind up with an inflated sense of what player performance is supposed to look like.

Happily, you can compare player performance within the context of their own season. Clay Davenport, an old colleague from Baseball Prospectus, cranks this data for every season. We can get a snapshot of where performance has gone at each position by using his Equivalent Average, or EqA. Equivalent Average isn’t the only stat you can employ; Clay scales production to batting average, with .260 defined as average.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at performances from the eight major positions over the past 25 years. We’ll start with the premium offensive positions, the four corners, from 1987 to the present:

Keep in mind, .260 is average for every season, so the year-to-year variations are going to refer back to that baseline. We can already draw a few broad conclusions -- some of which are pretty much accepted wisdom, but some prove slightly surprising.

Runs come from first base. This might seem obvious, but that’s especially the case now. It hasn’t always been that way. As you can see from the chart, left and right fielders have sometimes approached the first basemen, but that usually coincides with bad years for first basemen. But these days, first base is the game’s premium offense position.

If you look back further, that picture gets a lot more complicated. During the ’70s, first, right and left were equally important offensive positions, and in 1982 the four corners and center field were separated by just eight points. That changed in the late ’80s, as the standard for production at first base now winds up north of a .280 EqA year after year.

This higher standard has survived two expansions and the steroid era. This year Mark Teixeira was below average despite hitting 39 homers. Admittedly, it was a down year for him: he posted a .281 EqA compared to an MLB average of .283. In contrast, in 1991 Carlos Quintana defined adequacy at first -- if you’re from outside Boston and have forgotten him entirely, it’s probably just as well, but he was a nice OBP guy without much power.

What does that mean today? Well, this goes a little bit towards what Dave Schoenfield was writing about as far as Albert Pujols ranking as the top player in the game for so long. It also means that while teams like the Rangers have been leaving runs on the table by playing Mitch Moreland, you can understand why the Red Sox traded for Adrian Gonzalez while the Angels landed Pujols. Credit the Rays for keeping up with the other big-money contenders by bringing Carlos Pena back (.292 last year).

Right field is where outfield stars play. This might take us back to the days of Babe Ruth or Hank Aaron as opposed to Ted Williams or Barry Bonds. While the averages for the two positions have balanced out over time, right field is the much stronger position these days. Some of that has is because of a matter of preference: Lance Berkman played right for the Cardinals not because he’s a good right fielder, but because he’d help them score a ton of runs. Jose Bautista might be a fantasy league’s perfect third baseman, but the Blue Jays keep bumping him back to the outfield. Add in breakthrough seasons for Mike Stanton and Matt Joyce and even nice bounce-backs from Justin Upton and Jeff Francoeur, and you wind up with the game’s reigning premium outfield slot.

Left field is down. Way down. As you can see, the last 25 years have been pretty up and down for the left-side corners. The average for left fielders in the era of division play is .277, but they haven’t reached that mark since 2004.

The sad state of left-field offensive production has already been debated plenty among statheads. Is it an affordable risk on offense at a time when teams are more defense-conscious than ever before? Or is it a case of reaping what you sow when you make a point putting guys like Juan Pierre in your everyday lineup? It might reflect an industry-wide choice to employ better defenders at the position, sacrificing some offense. But in other ways it might also reflect how left field has become almost a garbage-time position for teams that stow their backup center fielder or a sputtering veteran holdover. Teams now lack the roster space to platoon or mix and match on offense the way that they could before the seven-man bullpen became fashionable.

Whatever your take, offensive production from left fielders is down at its lowest point in 25 years, matching 1997 for punchlessness with a .268 EqA. That isn’t a coincidence; much like the present, 1997 featured a lot of transition in left fields around the majors, with guys like Gregg Jefferies, Wil Cordero and B.J. Surhoff playing their first full seasons in the outfield. Moises Alou got hurt (again), Bernard Gilkey’s career started imploding, and Greg Vaughn and Ron Gant had the worst years of their careers.

Fast-forward to the present, and you find your share of setback seasons (Carl Crawford and Delmon Young). You also see a lot of flat-out awful from self-inflicted bad ideas, like Raul Ibanez in the last year of his contract while Vernon Wells, Carlos Lee and Alfonso Soriano marked time on huge deals that won’t go away soon enough.

Against that, you’ve got the guys we might call sops to the speed-and-defense crowd, or what I think of as the next-gen Dave Collins solutions: Brett Gardner, Jose Tabata, Michael Brantley, Sam Fuld, Pierre and more. They range from useful OBP sources to significantly less so, but not one of them is going to be Tim Raines, let alone Crawford. Last year Gerardo Parra had the best season among this group (.280 EqA); he also stands to lose playing time in 2012 to Jason Kubel, a guy who’s a much more conventional corner-outfield selection.

Third Base is hurting. If you’re a student of baseball history, you already know that back in the Deadball Era second base was more of a high-offense position than the hot corner. That changed in the 1920s with the introduction of the livelier ball, but every once in a while you get a year where you’ve got a great group of second baseman and a weak crew of third-base vets. That was very much the case in the late ’80 and early ’90s (thanks in part to guys like Roberto Alomar, Ryne Sandberg, Robby Thompson, Lou Whitaker and Julio Franco), but after the Marlins-Rockies expansion in ’93 second base fell back again. But now we’re at this same point again, where third base has slipped behind second base, if only barely (.262 EqA to .261).

With the declining standards reflected by Scott Rolen getting named to an All-Star team despite a lousy season, finding merely competent options for third base isn’t as easy as it sounds. Alex Rodriguez and Chipper Jones certainly aren’t getting any younger.

You can hope this will change for the better with the arrivals of touted prospects like Brett Lawrie, Mike Moustakas and Lonnie Chisenhall, but we’ve also seen a few major third-base prospect flops: Pedro Alvarez or Andy LaRoche, anyone? That’s why journeymen like Casey Blake, Ryan Roberts or Jack Hannahan get opportunities to stick around.

If anything, the state of third base these days speaks volumes about the Tigers' decision to move Miguel Cabrera across to the diamond after signing Prince Fielder. As Mark Simon notes, the defensive penalty might be steep, but reviewing this data suggests that there's a major competitive advantage to be gained relative to the competition, because they're making room for two superstar bats in the lineup: Cabrera with his career .315 EqA, and Fielder with his .313. The Cardinals just ran up a flag after risking their defense at the corners with Berkman in right, so you can't blame the Tigers for trying to do likewise.

Tomorrow, we’ll look at the up-the-middle positions. If you’re one of those people who think finding good help at shortstop or catcher is hard to find these days, you might have a surprise to look forward to.

It's been an interesting winter for baseball in Seattle. The Mariners failed to click with Prince Fielder. But they did survive a freak Pacific Northwest snowstorm to finalize a deal for Jesus Montero, the young catcher who Yankees general manager Brian Cashman says "may well be the best player I've ever traded."

On a positive note, the Mariners can take solace in having the third-rosiest outlook in the American League West. They're not as stacked with talent or brimming with TV dollars as their high-flying competition in Texas and Anaheim. But they appear to be in better shape than the Athletics, who dealt away half their pitching staff while "Moneyball" was snagging an Academy Award nomination.

Fresh off the Mariners' third sub-70-win season in four years, GM Jack Zduriencik continues to pursue his vision with the resolute, stay-the-course fervor of a man who's building a home brick by brick. Baseball America ranked the Mariners' farm system as the ninth best in the game before they acquired Montero and pitcher Hector Noesi in a stunning trade that sent Michael Pineda and Jose Campos to the Yankees. That's a big jump from No. 18 in 2011.

For the record, Zduriencik declined to answer questions about Fielder during the height of Prince-mania. And in accordance with club policy, he's still not talking Prince. But from all the background indicators, the Mariners were more a fringe participant than a serious player in the Fielder sweepstakes.

"It really doesn't matter what was said or done three days ago, two weeks ago or a month ago," Zduriencik said. "It's history, and we're moving forward."The Fielder-Seattle match was always destined to be a reach, for lots of reasons. Scott Boras wasn't going to be able to cultivate Mariners majority owner Hiroshi Yamauchi the way he has Mike Ilitch, Tom Hicks or the Lerner family in Washington. And Fielder was bound to have other options that didn't entail drawing 200 walks and playing for a losing team for the foreseeable future.But if Seattle fans feel let down, that's understandable. You might be short on patience, too, if you had to watch that offense year after year.

The attached chart provides a window into the pain threshold required of Seattle fans. A decade after the M's were perennial contenders with a lineup featuring Edgar Martinez, Bret Boone, John Olerud, Mike Cameron and a young(er) Ichiro Suzuki, their offense is a still-life portrait in spikes.It's no accident that attendance at Safeco Field has all the downward momentum of a mudslide. During the franchise's glory days in 2001 and 2002, the Mariners drew 3.5 million-plus. Last year, they ranked 23rd in the majors with 1.9 million fans. It was the first time the franchise failed to crack 2 million in a full season since 1992, when the double-play combination consisted of Harold Reynolds and a scrappy kid named Omar Vizquel.

Even without Fielder, Seattle is spending a lot more money than, say, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and San Diego -- developing teams in similar circumstances. The Mariners' payroll is expected to top $90 million again this year, with more than half that total, $47 million, earmarked for Suzuki, Felix Hernandez and Chone Figgins. Seattle management plans to make a big splash at some point, but it will be meticulously timed, and somewhere down the road.

"I would love to have a No. 3 or 4 hole hitter with some experience because it would help everybody around him," Zduriencik said. "But the process is what it is. You have to stay the course and be patient. I know that's very difficult to do. But it's proven. I've been in places where it's worked. We're going to do it here and we're going to make it work here."If the Mariners plan to improve in 2012 and become watchable offensively, they need their kids to grow up in a hurry and the veterans to get a second wind. The players below all merit watching if the M's are going to upgrade from a major league-worst 556 runs scored last season to something in the 650-700 range.

He's coming off the worst season of his career, with personal lows of 184 hits and a .272 batting average. There were 71 outfielders in baseball with at least 400 plate appearances last season. Of that group, Ichiro ranked 69th in OPS, at .645. The only two players who were worse: Minnesota's Ben Revere (.619) and the White Sox's Alex Rios (.613).

But the Mariners remain hopeful Ichiro hasn't reached the point of no return. His .295 batting average on balls in play was easily the lowest of his career, so some bad luck might have factored into the equation. More important, we're talking about an athlete who's one of the all-time greats at his craft. Remember the classic Ichiro quote of several years ago, when he looked forward to facing Daisuke Matsuzaka with the declaration, "I hope he arouses the fire that's dormant in the innermost recesses of my soul. I plan to face him with the zeal of a challenger"? The Mariners are hoping for the re-emergence of that Ichiro.

"I don't think he's going to bounce back to .330 or .340, but he can be a productive player," said an American League front-office man. "You can bank on the fact that he's more motivated this offseason than maybe ever before."Manager Eric Wedge is making enough noise about dropping Ichiro from the leadoff spot that it seems like a fait accompli. Scouts have always said that Ichiro has the potential to hit with more power. But can he do it at age 38?

Chone Figgins
At this stage of Figgins' career, it's tempting to write him off as a lost cause. When Figgins hit .259 in 2010, you could give him a pass because he was changing teams, positions and spots in the batting order -- never mind feeling the pressure from a new four-year, $36 million contract. It's tougher to make that case after last season, when he lost all his confidence, hit .188 and looked like a guy with barely a trace of major league ability.

Two weeks ago, the Mariners brought 10 position players to Seattle for three days of workouts at Safeco Field and dinner at the manager's house. The invitees included Justin Smoak, Dustin Ackley, Brendan Ryan, Franklin Gutierrez, Miguel Olivo and Figgins, among others. By all accounts, Figgins is in a more positive frame of mind these days. He got married this winter, and he has recovered from the groin injury that forced him to shut it down in September.

With Kyle Seager atop the depth chart at third base, Wedge plans to move Figgins around the field this season. Maybe a return to his old super-utility role can rouse Figgins from his stupor and help him rediscover the zest for the game that he's seemingly lost."There's no magic wand to wave here," Zduriencik said. "He's a veteran guy who's had success. But he hasn't had it here, so it's going to be a challenge for him. He has to come in and prove people wrong. Sometimes that mindset is good for a player to have."

Franklin Gutierrez
Gutierrez is generally regarded as the best defensive center fielder in baseball when he's healthy. But he was a mess from the outset in 2011. A stomach disorder left him fatigued and underweight, and limited him to only 25 spring training at-bats. During the regular season, Gutierrez hit one homer in 322 at-bats before going down for the count with an oblique injury in September.

Gutierrez logged a .666 OPS in 2010 when healthy, so he has something to prove as a hitter. But it appears that his physical maladies are behind him. He has learned to regulate his diet and his stomach medication, and he no longer looks like a walking ghost. Gutierrez weighed 180 pounds when he left Seattle in October. Upon his return two weeks ago, he checked in at 199.

Zduriencik was Milwaukee's scouting director when the team brought Fielder, Ryan Braun, Rickie Weeks, J.J. Hardy and Corey Hart into the system, so he understands the importance of the draft and player development. Seattle's current group doesn't compare to that contingent, but the Mariners have some intriguing pieces.

Ackley, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2009 draft, wore down as the season progressed and hit .219 in September, but still finished sixth in the AL Rookie of the Year balloting. Ackley rarely chases balls out of the strike zone and has that special ability to get fooled, be out in front and still keep his hands back and hit the ball with authority. The Mariners think he's a potential 20-homer guy at second base."He stays on the baseball for such a long period of time," Zduriencik said. "He has that innate ability to put the sweet spot of the bat on the ball. It's a gift."

The same goes for Montero, whose opposite-field approach appears to be well-suited for Safeco Field. It remains to be seen whether he can handle the demands of catching at the big league level.Smoak, 25, was rushed to the big leagues in Texas before he was ready, and endured a wall-to-wall test of his resolve last season. He played with injuries to both thumbs, suffered a broken nose and a broken bone around his eye, and had to deal with the death of his father in June."He went through an awful lot, let alone that we weren't a very good offensive club," Zduriencik said, "and now you're taking this young kid and putting him in the middle of your lineup. That was a pretty big challenge for him."

Seager, a third-round pick in 2009, hit .328 in the minors and is frequently described as a "Bill Mueller type." Mike Carp, a former Mets prospect, put together a 20-game hitting streak in August. And outfielder Casper Wells, acquired from Detroit in the Doug Fister trade, once recorded a 25-homer, 25-steal season in the minors. He has some holes in his swing, but is certainly athletic.Although Danny Hultzen, Taijuan Walker and Seattle's young pitching prospects have earned rave reviews, the jury is out on the young position player talent in the big leagues. One AL scout regards Seager, Carp and Wells as more "complementary-type players" than front-line starters on a contending club. That means the Mariners will be leaning heavily on Ackley, Montero and Smoak, who have a combined 1,169 major league at-bats.

"You like Montero, and you like Ackley," the scout said. "But Ichiro is on the decline, and there are some questions the rest of the way around the field. I have questions with the bullpen and the back of the rotation, too. I just don't see them having the weapons to get in there and mix it up with the Rangers and the Angels. For me, they're still a few years and several pieces away from being there."Zduriencik's contract runs through 2013, so he has at least two more years to produce the type of breakthrough season that another hard-core scouting guy, Terry Ryan, achieved after some fallow years in Minnesota. The Mariners don't have a Prince, but they have a plan. Time will tell if they have enough players.

With Wednesday's deadline to sign Yu Darvish quickly approaching, the Texas Rangers need to get this deal done.Darvish is critical for the club's rotation in 2012 and for the foreseeable future.

First, the Rangers must trust their scouts and front-office personnel. And the club is convinced that Darvish has the ability to be a front-line starter for years to come. They were sure enough that GM Jon Daniels and CEO Nolan Ryan convinced ownership to pull out the checkbook and, as long as a deal is completed by the deadline, hand over $52.7 million to Darvish's team in Japan before even paying him a contract that could make the investment worth $120-130 million.

Yes, it's a risk. But this club has gone from an also-ran in the American League West to the two-time defending AL champions in large part because of its ability to scout and obtain talented players. It's time to trust those folks again.

Darvish is 25 years old. He's entering what should be the prime of his career. He has great fastball command, an assortment of pitches and the ability to make batters swing and miss. There will certainly be an adjustment period for Darvish in coming to the big leagues. But just as he hasn't faced major league hitters, they haven't seen him, either. Advantage: Pitcher.

As of now, the Rangers enter the 2012 season with one veteran -- 33-year-old Colby Lewis -- and four young starters:

• Derek Holland showed that he could be ready to take a huge next step after the second half of 2011 and a great start in Game 4 of the World Series. But he's still maturing.

• Matt Harrison has to show he can back up his 2011 season and stay healthy in 2012.

• Alexi Ogando was an All-Star in the first half of 2011, but ran out of gas. Can he build up enough stamina to start should Darvish not sign?

• And what about Neftali Feliz? He's going to get his chance in the rotation this season, but no one knows for sure how he'll handle the transition.

In other words: The club could still use a top-level arm. Darvish fits that mold. Despite the unknowns of bringing his game to the majors, he has a solid track record and the potential to become one of the club's top starters in the years to come.

Texas believed in Darvish enough that it watched C.J. Wilson sign with the rival Angels. The Rangers know they need another big arm and Darvish provides that. Get him signed and let's see what he can do.

For the first two months and 15 days of the 2011-12 offseason, those sneaky New York Yankees were so quiet, they made the Kansas City Royals look like, well, the Yankees.

Sheez, you didn't think THAT would last all winter, did you?Hey, you know all those worries about the Yankees' starting-pitching depth we've been obsessing on for weeks? Welllllll, never mind.That plot line became permanently defunct in the span of, oh, about 45 minutes Friday night.There we were, trying to digest their stunning trade of Jesus Montero for Michael Pineda when, next thing we knew, Hiroki Kuroda was asking for directions to the Bronx.

So think through what just happened here. For 12 relaxing months, any time all of us baseball geniuses were asked what we thought about the Yankees, we could just push our favorite knee-jerk-analysis button and answer: "Who the heck's going to pitch on the nights CC Sabathia doesn't?"Uh-oh. So much for that.Now the Yankees actually have too MUCH starting pitching. Theoretically, anyway.They have a true ace in CC. They have a future ace in Pineda. They have the under-appreciated Kuroda, whose 2.85 road ERA and top-10 finish in Adjusted ERA-Plus in the National League last year tell us he wasn't just a creation of Dodger Stadium. And then here come Ivan Nova, Phil Hughes, Freddy Garcia and good old A.J. Burnett to fill out the rest of the schedule.

Unless they trade away somebody in that second group. And don't bet against it.Could they dump Burnett for some other team's worst contract? Could they swap Hughes for a young bat to replace Montero? Anything is possible now.And you have to award extra shrewd points to Brian Cashman for pulling off this arm-fest without jeopardizing the Yankees' fervent new quest to plunge their payroll below the luxury-tax threshold by 2014.Pineda will make under a million bucks this year and won't even be arbitration eligible until 2014. And Kuroda was a great buy, for one year and $10 million. He doesn't block the long-term path of Manny Banuelos or Dellin Betances -- and he represents one more reason the Yankees can feel great about not caving and committing five years of expensive, A.J.-esque exasperation to Edwin Jackson.

Oh, there was a cost, of course. And that cost was having to give up Montero, who seems destined to head west and fulfill his destiny as a patient, potent, middle-of-the-order masher, even in Safeco Canyon.But it IS kind of interesting, isn't it, that the Yankees have been dangling Montero in all sorts of potential monster deals for two years now?Maybe that's just because they're overloaded with catching depth in their system, and they sure don't lack for offense, with or without him. Or … maybe they weren't completely sold on him, for reasons they're bound to start leaking in the next 30 seconds.How good might Michael Pineda be? Here are just a few tidbits to chew on:

• This guy whiffed 173 hitters in 171 innings last year. And you know how many starters in the history of the Yankees have averaged better than a strikeout an inning over a full season? How about TWO: Roger Clemens in 2002 and David Cone twice (1997 and 1998).• Those 173 strikeouts and that 9.1 strikeouts-per-nine-innings ratio came in a season in which Pineda pitched at 22 years old. Want to guess how many right-handed pitchers in the history of the American League ever had that many punchouts and that good a strikeout ratio at age 22 or younger? Exactly one: Dave Boswell (barely), for the 1966 Twins.

• Pineda's average fastball whooshed along at 94.7 miles per hour last year, according to FanGraphs. The only starting pitchers in the big leagues who topped that were Alexi Ogando (95.1), Justin Verlander (95.0) and David Price (94.8).• And Pineda generated a fabulous 24.2 swing-and-miss percentage last year, according to FanGraphs. The only pitchers in either league who did better than that were Tim Lincecum (24.9), Brandon Morrow (24.6), Cole Hamels (24.6) and Mat Latos (24.5).

Yeah, it's true Pineda faded in the second half, winning only once in 10 starts and sputtering to a 5.12 ERA. And it's also true he struggled against the AL East (4.73 ERA). But he's the kind of pitcher who almost never gets traded these days -- and the Yankees found a way to trade for him, anyway.So mark it down in your offseason journal: Friday the 13th of January -- the night the Yankees awoke from their winter of hibernation … and started adding high-end pitchers to their rotation the way most New Yorkers add dollars to their subway cards.Jayson Stark is a senior writer for ESPN.com. In the living room of a lovely home at the end of an oak tree-lined lane in Hillsboro, Ore., Ben Petrick inserts a disc into the DVD player. His wife, Kellie, has taken their 4-year-old daughter, Makena, upstairs for a nap, giving Petrick the opportunity to flop into his easy chair and fast-forward to the moment he wants you to see.

The video is of June 29, 2001, and Petrick is batting sixth as a catcher for the Colorado Rockies. With one out and nobody on in the top of the seventh as the Rockies trail the Diamondbacks 3-0, Petrick puts a perfect swing on a 2-2 fastball from Randy Johnson, launching the pitch into the leftfield seats at Bank One Ballpark for his ninth homer of the season. It's a thing of beauty.

But that's not what he wants to show you -- Petrick is not one to brag, even if he did go deep off a future Hall of Famer. No, he wants to show you what happened after he hit the home run. "Watch as I run around the bases," he says. "Look at my left arm. It's not in sync with my right. It's just sort of hanging there."

He has other video evidence: a quaking left hand as he gives the target behind the plate, his difficulty removing a shin guard off his left leg after a double and a left leg spasm just before he goes the other way off CC Sabathia. Petrick played 240 major league games, with at least 221 of them coming after young-onset Parkinson's disease began to take over his 22-year-old body in 2000.

The Rockies saw so much potential that they gave Petrick a $495,000 signing bonus after drafting him from Hillsboro's Glencoe High School, near Portland. He didn't disappoint after his September 1999 call-up. Having already torn through two levels of the minors, Petrick hit four homers, drove in 12 runs and batted .323 in 19 games. "Think Buster Posey with speed," says Pirates manager Clint Hurdle, who met Petrick as a minor league hitting instructor and later managed him in the bigs. "He had five tools, six counting his ability to handle pitchers."

"He could've been one of the best catchers ever," says Brent Butler, a Rockies infielder who roomed with Petrick. "I'm not just saying that. I truly believe it."

"He had no ceiling," says Rockies executive vice president Dan O'Dowd, the general manager who ended up trading Petrick to the Detroit Tigers in 2003 because he wasn't quite living up to his potential. "I only wish I'd known."

Who could have known? Who could have known that a player some considered a potential Hall of Fame catcher, a player who represented the traditional sense of NEXT in sports, would have his future stolen from him by an incurable disease that rarely afflicts people as young as 22?

How good was Petrick? Go back and look at his stats. In those 240 games for the Rockies and Tigers, he hit .257 with 27 home runs and 94 RBIs while trying to control the symptoms of Parkinson's, which include tremors, rigidity and slow movements. He was not only tough enough to be a catcher, the most demanding position on the field, but also athletic enough to play centerfield when he wasn't behind the plate.

"Looking back, I am amazed at what he accomplished," says Rockies first baseman Todd Helton, who was Colorado's first pick in the 1995 draft, the year Petrick was taken in the second round. "It's hard enough performing at the highest level of this game, which he did. On top of that, he had to fight off a disease that robbed him of his physical ability. And on top of that, he had to play under the tremendous pressure of hiding the effects of that disease."

Helton pauses. "You know what, though?" he says. "I'm more impressed by what he's done with his life since."

As it turns out, Ben Petrick lost one gift and found another.

Denying Jeff Bagwell would be a travesty

In spring training of 1991, Bob Ryan of the Boston Globe wrote a glowing profile of Jeff Bagwell, suggesting that the Red Sox would one day lament the trade of Bagwell for 37-year-old relief pitcher Larry Andersen.
"Bagwell could be big one that got away," read the headline.The story appeared in March. Bagwell had yet to play a regular-season game in the major leagues, but the picture was already clear: Red Sox general manager Lou Gorman had made a mistake of potentially historic proportions.

"Jeff Bagwell owned New Britain," wrote Ryan. "He hit .333. He led the Eastern League in hits and doubles. Everybody said he was the best prospect in the league, maybe the best in all of Double-A. A year or so in Pawtucket, and then The Bigs."Bill James raved about Bagwell, foreseeing him as a hitter capable of winning batting titles. "Gorman has heard it all," wrote Ryan, "and he is quite prepared to live with the consequences of the deal. 'In the seven years I've been here,' (Gorman) contends, 'I don't think any young player has come back to haunt me yet.'"

Last year, his first time on the Hall of Fame ballot, Bagwell received 41.7 percent of the vote. As Hall of Fame chances go, that isn’t necessarily a distressing starting point. Jim Rice got 29.8 percent his first year. Goose Gossage received 33.3 percent and Gary Carter 42.3 percent. Andre Dawson didn’t begin much higher, at 45.3 percent. Bert Blyleven notoriously started at just 17.8 percent. The writers would eventually vote all those players into the Hall.The vote total, however, drew outrage across the Internet, and understandably so. For a player of Bagwell's abilities and accomplishments to receive such a low vote total was ... well, something of historic precedent.Using Baseball-Reference's ranking of players via its Wins Above Replacement statistic, Bagwell rates as one most dominant players since World War II. Here are the position players ranked Nos. 11 through 30 and how many years it took them to get voted into the Hall of Fame:

Wins Above Replacement may not be a perfect statistic, but I don't think anyone can argue that the above list represents anything other than a list of the greatest players of the past 50-plus years. As you can see, other than Mathews, every eligible candidate cruised into Cooperstown in his first year of eligibility. Furthermore, the following players, all with a career WAR below 70, made it in their first year: Brooks Robinson, Tony Gwynn, Eddie Murray, Willie McCovey, Ozzie Smith, Ernie Banks, Dave Winfield, Willie Stargell and Kirby Puckett.Yet Bagwell couldn't receive 50 percent of the vote, which indicates one of two things:

1. A large percentage of voters don't realize how great Bagwell was.
2. A large percentage of voters didn't vote for him because he had big muscles.

In 1990, the year Gorman traded him to the Astros, Bagwell played at Double-A New Britain (Conn.). While he hit .333 (second in the league) and led the league with 34 doubles, he also hit just four home runs. This fact has been cited as evidence that Bagwell must have turned himself into a slugger who mashed 449 career home runs with the help of steroids. After all, a year after hitting four home runs in Double-A, he hit 15 home runs for the Astros and won the National League Rookie of the Year Award. He would end up topping 30 home runs nine times in the major leagues.

You know how many home runs the 1990 New Britain Red Sox hit? Thirty-one. Bagwell was second on the team; Eric Wedge hit five. The team featured eight position players who would reach the majors, including future Red Sox shortstop John Valentin. He hit .218 with two home runs in 351 plate appearances. New Britain was an impossible place to hit. Ryan suggested because of that, Bagwell wouldn't be intimidated by the Astrodome.

"It can't be worse in the gaps than New Britain," Ryan quotes Bagwell as saying. "The ball doesn't go anywhere down there."The year before, New Britain hit 42 home runs. (Mo Vaughn hit just eight.) It hit 34 in 1988. Bagwell, who Ryan describes in the article as having "something approaching a hockey build," didn't lack power; he was just playing his minor league games in the Grand Canyon.

Bagwell has denied using steroids. He never tested positive once testing was initiated late in his career. He wasn't mentioned in the Mitchell report. He played 156 or more games in 10 of his 15 seasons. Other than his freakishly awesome 1994 season in which he hit .368 in the strike-shortened season, his career shows a rather normal curve of improvement, peak value and slow decline starting in his mid-30s.

But he had big muscles.Since it would seem presumptuous to assume guilt without evidence, I'll assume the majority of voters somehow missed Bagwell's greatness, as they did with Mathews for a few years or with Blyleven for so long. These things happen, but fortunately they usually correct themselves. Bagwell didn't reach the magic 3,000-hit barrier, and he didn't even hit 500 home runs. Some of his value is tied into being an excellent baserunner and solid defensive first baseman, things that can be overlooked in Hall of Fame voting.

I assume the voters will eventually come around and realize Bagwell is just one of 22 players with 1,500 RBIs and 1,500 runs scored since World War II -- his 152 runs scored in 2000 are the most in one season since the 1930s. Of those 22, he ranks seventh in OPS and eighth in adjusted OPS (behind guys named Bonds, Mantle, Musial, Aaron, Mays, Ramirez and Robinson).So, yes, Bagwell will eventually get elected to Cooperstown. Because he wouldn't be denied admittance because he had big muscles.

A few thoughts from the New York Giants' division-clinching victory over the Dallas Cowboys at MetLife Stadium on Sunday night.MLB 2012 Preasons ans Mlb 2012 Season start in March 2.12.

What it means: The Giants finish the season at 9-7 and win the NFC East. The Cowboys finish the season at 8-8, technically in third place in the division behind the Giants and the Philadelphia Eagles. The Giants started the season 6-2, weathered a brutal second-half schedule and claimed the division title with two victories over the Cowboys in the final four weeks of the season.

Winning the energy battle: The Giants came out of the gate far more fired-up than did their visitors in this winner-take-all game. Thanks to high-energy plays by everyone from Mathias Kiwanuka to Victor Cruz to Bear Pascoe -- and thanks to a laundry list of Cowboys mistakes, especially in coverage -- the Giants were able to build a 21-0 halftime lead and hold on even after the Cowboys came out of the locker room re-energized and much more focused and effective in the second half.

Cru-u-u-u-u-u-zzzz: The player of the game for the Giants -- and maybe the player of their season, at least on offense -- was wide receiver Cruz. Eight days after turning the Jets game on its head with a 99-yard touchdown catch, Cruz caught the ball running across the field in the first quarter and got Sunday night's scoring started with a 74-yard touchdown catch from Eli Manning. And in the fourth quarter, after the Cowboys had cut the lead to 21-14 and were building momentum, Cruz hauled in a 44-yard reception on 3rd-and-7 and a 20-yard catch on 2nd-and-10 to keep alive a field-goal drive. When Manning needs to make a big play, right now, Cruz appears to be his favorite target.

Pressure points: The Giants were able to get a ton of pressure on Dallas quarterback Tony Romo, at least in the first half while they built their big lead. The Cowboys were unable to get any pressure on Manning until the second half, and even then it was inconsistent and they weren't able to finish off sacks. It made the difference in the game, as it seemed clear that the Cowboys' receivers were able to beat the Giants' defensive backs if given time, but they weren't. Manning had all the time in the world to pick apart a leaky Dallas secondary, targeting an overmatched Terence Newman in the first half and Orlando Scandrick, who's likely to replace Newman as a starter in 2012, in the second.

Off-season focus: It seems extremely clear that the two areas on which the Cowboys need to win this offseason are the offensive line and the defensive secondary. No amount of talent at quarterback wide receiver, running back or linebacker will make up for their deficiencies in those two crucial building-block areas, which is where they lost their games and the division down the stretch.

Full-strength strength: The Giants' defense works only when it's able to get that pressure on the quarterback with their defensive linemen. With Osi Umenyiora back and healthy after missing four games with an ankle injury, the Giants were able to mix looks and pressures with him, Justin Tuck and 2011 breakout star Jason Pierre-Paul. If they can keep all three of their great pass-rushing ends healthy (not to mention Kiwanuka, who plays linebacker now but retains his pass-rusher's soul), they will lean hard on that for however deep they go in the playoffs. They get another high-powered passing offense next week with Matt Ryan and the Falcons coming to town, and they'll need to keep after the quarterback to make sure Atlanta's great receivers don't do damage down the field.

What's next: The Giants will host the Atlanta Falcons in a wild-card playoff game at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday, right back here at MetLife Stadium. The Cowboys can begin to make plans for what to do with the 14th pick in the NFL draft.

A's ship Andrew Bailey to Boston

The Oakland Athletics traded All-Star closer Andrew Bailey and outfielder Ryan Sweeney to the Red Sox on Wednesday for outfielder Josh Reddick and infield prospect Miles Head and minor league pitcher Raul Alcantara."I'm excited, obviously," Bailey said. "It's an organization that continues to win each and every year and they're definitely a contender each and every year."I'm grateful that the Red Sox saw value in me. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't excited about being a Red Sox."

In the deal, Bailey gives the Red Sox a reliable ninth-inning guy to replace the departed Jonathan Papelbon, who signed a $50 million, four-year contract as a free agent with the Philadelphia Phillies in November.

"Andrew's a proven top-quality closer in the American League. He's done it for three years and has had a lot of success," said general manager Ben Cherington. "He's converted a very high percentage of his opportunities. He's got the stuff and we really like his makeup for Boston."

Bailey -- the 2009 AL Rookie of the Year who made the All-Star team that season and again in 2010 -- has been the subject of trade talk this offseason.

The right-handed Bailey, 27, went 0-4 with a 3.24 ERA and 24 saves in 41 2/3 innings over 42 appearances this year. He spent time on the disabled list for the second straight season, pitching for the first time in 2011 on May 29 after being sidelined with a strained right forearm.

"We had a chance to look into Bailey's medical history and we got to know a lot more about what he's been through," Cherington said. "He had Tommy John surgery five years ago and has fully recovered from that. He had some elbow symptoms in 2010 and had a minor procedure after the 2010 season. Then he came into spring training in 2011, perhaps ramped up too quickly and had a setback and (there) appeared to be some scar tissue breakup.

"It was a minor scar tissue injury and he was able to recover from that and get back to pitching and perform well. His stuff and performance was solid down the stretch. We're very confident he'll come into camp ready to go and ready to help our team in 2012."

Bailey becomes the fourth key pitcher traded this month by the rebuilding A's, who dealt starter Trevor Cahill and reliever Craig Breslow to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Dec. 9 and then sent left-handed starter Gio Gonzalez to Washington last Thursday.

"There's nothing like the atmosphere of running in from the bullpen at Fenway Park," Bailey said. "You can't put it into words. It's something I look forward to doing day in and day out in a Red Sox uniform. Fenway is the greatest stadium in baseball and to be able to pitch in that uniform, and in that stadium, is something I'll never forget."

Reddick, who began last season at Triple-A Pawtucket before being promoted in late May, will look to fill a big void in Oakland's open outfield.

The 24-year-old Reddick batted .280 with seven homers and 28 RBIs in 87 games for Boston in 2011. He can play any outfield spot and likely will get immediate action for the A's, who already lost outfielders David DeJesus and Josh Willingham in free agency. Center fielder Coco Crisp isn't expected to return either.

Oakland general manager Billy Beane is retooling his roster for the future in hopes that the franchise will get the go-ahead to build a new ballpark some 40 miles south in San Jose despite the San Francisco Giants' owning the territorial rights to technology-rich Santa Clara County. Beane and owner Lew Wolff have said they expect to hear soon from commissioner Bud Selig, and Beane said the unsettled stadium situation would affect his ability to sign his own free agents this winter.

The A's (74-88) haven't posted a winning record or earned a playoff berth since being swept in the 2006 AL Championship Series by Detroit.

At last summer's trade deadline, the A's and Red Sox were near completion on a deal that would have sent Oakland right-hander Rich Harden to Boston for Triple-A first baseman Lars Anderson, but it fell through late because of Harden's lengthy list of injury issues.

Former Red Sox pitching coach Curt Young returned to the A's this offseason to work under manager Bob Melvin.

Head, a first baseman, batted .299 with 22 home runs and 82 RBIs in 129 games with two of the Red Sox's Class A affiliates, at Greenville and Salem.

The right-handed Alcantara, 19, combined for a 1-4 record and a 2.20 ERA in 13 starts with Class A Lowell and the Red Sox affiliate in the Gulf Coast League. He struck out 50 and walked just 12 while holding opponents to a .208 batting average.

NEW YORK -- Baseball's new labor contract includes more video replay, the chance for a longer All-Star break and a small, but likely welcome perk for players: the chance to get a private room instead of a roommate during spring training.

The Associated Press obtained the document that includes several changes, many starting next year. Among them:
• Allowing teams from the same division to meet in the playoffs before the league championship series.
• A ban on players getting tattoos with corporate logos.
• The possibility of players wearing microphones during games.

Players have already ratified the hundreds of pages contained in Major League Baseball's Memorandum of Understanding. Owners are scheduled to vote Thursday.Also part of the deal: Any big leaguer who wants to change uniform numbers without switching teams better give eight months' notice unless he's willing to buy warehouses full of his overstocked jerseys.MLB wants to expand replay to include fair-or-foul calls, "whether a fly ball or line drive was trapped" and fan interference all around the ballpark. Umpires still must give their approval and it's uncertain whether the extra replay will be in place by Opening Day.

Video review began in August 2008, but only to look at potential home runs.The All-Star break will be expanded to four days, rather than the traditional three-day gap. The five-year deal says starting in 2013 that MLB "shall have the right to elect to switch the All-Star game from Tuesday to Wednesday and the Home Run Derby from Monday to Tuesday." Sixty-nine of 82 All-Star games have been played on Tuesday, according to STATS LLC.Gone, too, are the days of roommates, something that dates back decades, to the days players rode the rails to Florida. Now, all players on 40-man rosters are assured of single rooms during spring training. They've had that perk during the regular season since 1997.

And for players thinking about selling ads on their bodies, MLB has thought ahead. The agreement says "no player may have any visible markings or logos tattooed on his body" as part of the uniform regulations."Just trying to head something off at the pass," said Rob Manfred, baseball's executive vice president for labor relations.The NFL has a rule against "unauthorized commercial identification," according to spokesman Greg Aiello, and the NBA has a rule banning corporate insignia, spokesman Mike Bass said. Baseball appears to be the first U.S. major pro league to specifically ban commercial tattoos.

Quick uniform number switches will be a thing of the past.Players must tell the commissioner's office by July 31 of the preceding year if they want a new jersey. That is, unless "the player (or someone on his behalf) purchases the existing finished goods inventory of apparel containing the player's jersey number." As in, every replica jersey, jacket, T-shirt, mug and anything else with a number that's anywhere in stock.The deal also bans players and team officials from asking official scorers to reconsider decisions -- clubs must instead send video to MLB to appeal calls -- and increases punishments for slow-moving hitters and pitchers, raising pace-of-game fines up to $10,000 each for the sixth violation and beyond.

There are several provisions regarding players' conduct. They include:
• A ban on players betting with illegal bookies on any sport.
• New language allowing the commissioner to discipline players for violating federal, state or local law or for conduct "materially detrimental or materially prejudicial to the best interests of baseball."
• Possible suspensions for intentionally throwing a ball or equipment at non-uniformed personnel with the intention of causing bodily harm; for assaulting fans, media or umpires; or for making public statements that question the integrity of the game, the umpires, the commissioner or the commissioner's staff.

"Just want to make sure our rules are up to date," Manfred said. "In general we looked at the rules and thought we had some things that could be tighter."Players also can be disciplined for violating MLB's social media policy, which still is being developed.The agreement calls for nicknames written on equipment to "not reasonably likely to offend fans, business partners, players and others associated with the game."

Eliminating a practice of some teams, there is a prohibition on "taxi squads" -- calling up players from the minors and not activating them. Also, teams may only invite players to offseason minicamps if they are not yet eligible for salary arbitration.The deal includes a new schedule format starting in 2013, when there will be six five-team divisions, with no more than 20 interleague games per team. Teams will play 17 or 18 times against division opponents, with the exact format still to be worked out.

And there's at least one issue still to be decided.For the postseason, the sides agreed to negotiate on tiebreaker rules -- do teams tied for the last wild-card berth meet on the field, or will the tie be broken by a formula?

Selling Prince Fielder is big business
In conjunction with Prince Fielder's free-agent debut, his representatives at the Scott Boras Corporation produced a 73-page binder celebrating his achievements in the game. The book originally encompassed eight sections, but the Boras folks added a ninth after Fielder finished third in the National League Most Valuable Player race -- marking the third time since 2007 that he has cracked the top five.THTP9WCSTQXP

Boras recently distributed the book to assorted general managers, team owners and media members. He also gave a copy to Fielder, who walked with an extra spring in his step after examining the contents.

"Prince is a very modest guy, but there were a few things in there he really, really loved," Boras said. "He told me, 'I don't have much in my man cave -- just my Silver Slugger [Awards] and some other things I've done. But this book is going in my man cave.' I figure if we made it into his man cave, it held high standards."

Fielder, one of baseball's top two free agents this winter alongside Albert Pujols, now has the stage almost exclusively to himself. Pujols signed a 10-year, $254 million contract with the Los Angeles Angels last week, and shortstop Jose Reyes and starting pitchers C.J. Wilson and Mark Buehrle have dropped off the board as well. That leaves Boras clients Fielder, Ryan Madson and Edwin Jackson among the top tier of players still available.

Boras has argued from the outset that Fielder is a separate case from Pujols, because Fielder four years younger and will be 35 at the end of his next contract even if he signs an eight-year deal. Fielder has never been known for his defense, but Boras contends that his youth and durability make him a fit for National League teams as well as AL clubs, because he'll be able to continue playing first base for a while yet.

It's still anybody's guess where Fielder will land. The Seattle Mariners are a candidate because they need a big power bat and general manager Jack Zduriencik drafted Fielder out of high school in his previous tenure as Milwaukee scouting director. Toronto seems intrigued, but CEO Paul Beeston has declared a moratorium on deals of more than five years in length. The Cubs are talking to Fielder, the Orioles are free to dream, and the Rangers, Nationals and Marlins keep resurfacing in speculation no matter how adamantly they deny it might happen.

When the website mlbtraderumors.com invited its readers to take a stab at Fielder's destination, it received more than 37,000 responses. Almost 24 percent of baseball fans predicted Fielder will sign with the Cubs. Seattle and Texas were the only other teams to surpass 10 percent in the poll.

Cooperstown-worthy

If aspiring Prince Fielder suitors need a nudge, they might want to consult "The Book."

Boras produced his first binder of this type before Alex Rodriguez signed his $252 million deal with Texas in 2000. Cooperstown called to request a copy, and the A-Rod book now sits in the Hall of Fame library beside the binder that Boras produced for Greg Maddux upon his retirement in 2008.

This year, Boras put out similar books for Madson, Jackson and fellow free agents Francisco Rodriguez and Carlos Pena. No offense to Boras clients Willie Bloomquist and Bruce Chen, but they'll have to find something else to put in their man caves.

What some people might call promotion or marketing Boras views as hard-core information sharing. He's a paid enlightener.

"It's kind of a catharsis for me when we do these books to say, 'What's a player's standing historically? What's his standing currently? What does he mean to a franchise?'" Boras said.

"My attitude is, it never hurts. It educates our staff, the players and myself. And it educates members of the media and may prompt further thought for their articles. I've never had a general manager say, 'No, I don't want one.' They like the information. I had one general manager say, 'You gave me two of them on a couple of players, and I put them by my bedside and looked at them at night.'"

Boras is no different from other agents who assemble reams of statistics on their clients and pass the info along to baseball executives. As Milwaukee general manager Doug Melvin notes, he recently received an informational packet from agents Rex Gary and Jim Turner on behalf of clients Brad Lidge and Jon Rauch, and was particularly impressed by Lidge's charity work and involvement in the community. Similarly, Melvin finds some useful nuggets in Boras' binders.

"There are times I leaf through them, and I think they help," Melvin said. "It's not as detailed as an arbitration case, but it's a good selling point. It's no different than a car dealership putting out a brochure on why you should buy an Audi or a Range Rover. This is a world of statistics, and we can get caught up and buried among some useful stats and some wasted stats."

Boras' books attract lots of attention because he represents so many big-name players, but there's also a painstaking attention to quality and detail in the product. The homage to Fielder is encased in a silver aluminum antimicrobial binder and features black cardstock dividers, metal rivets and the Boras company logo emblazoned in the lower left-hand corner of the cover. It's not the type of production that's hastily assembled at Kinko's at 3 a.m.

"I told Scott the other day, 'It's fireproof,"' Melvin said, laughing. "It's a fireproof booklet. Even if you wanted to throw it away, you can't."

A Prince-ly profile

The information within is destined to make any team believe that it's getting a bargain regardless of how much money it spends. Fielder's life story includes separate sections dedicated to his power, plate discipline and durability. The first section in the book proclaims him "Historically Great Through Age 27," and the momentum builds from there:

• The book is sprinkled with laudatory, previously publicized quotes from Heath Bell, Tony La Russa, Ron Roenicke and fellow Brewers Randy Wolf and Ryan Braun, who once said of Fielder, "He's the strongest man in baseball, no doubt. I really think he could hold his own in the World's Strongest Man competition."

• The "Built Fielder Tough" section points out that he's one of only 10 players in history to appear in at least 959 games over any six-year span. The others: Steve Garvey, Dale Murphy, Juan Pierre, Cal Ripken Jr., Pete Rose, Ron Santo, Ichiro Suzuki, Miguel Tejada and Billy Williams. Unfortunately, there's no room at the inn for Lou Gehrig, who topped out at 928 games back in the days of the 154-game schedule.

• Section 2 duly notes that Fielder has 230 home runs through age 27. Only three Hall of Fame first basemen -- Jimmie Foxx, Orlando Cepeda and Harmon Killebrew -- surpassed 200 homers by that age.

• In the Projections portion of the book, Boras' statistical analysts gaze into the future and point out that in five years, Fielder will have joined Foxx, Mickey Mantle, Eddie Mathews, Mel Ott and Babe Ruth as one of six players with 400 homers, 1,000 RBIs and 1,000 walks through age 32. A few pages later, the book projects that Fielder will have 600 homers, 1,700 RBIs and 1,500 walks by age 37. Those totals would place him in the exclusive company of Ruth and Barry Bonds.

"A curiosity"

Inevitably, the books elicit some eye-rolling in front offices. Baseball executives also find their eyes glazing over when Boras starts pontificating about franchise values and the specifics of TV rights deals. One general manager, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said it's impossible to take the historical comparisons too seriously because differences in eras are lacking and the portrayal is inevitably slanted 100 percent in favor of Boras' clients. Indeed, he thinks the binders are meant to impress Boras' players as much as potential suitors.

"I think they're a curiosity," the GM said. "It's kind of like the Sports Illustrated swimsuit calendar. You look forward to it coming out each year. But you're not really going to do anything about it.

"This is as much about client retention as anything else. This is the client saying, 'Boy, is Scott working for me or what?"'

In the end, a team without the resources to play in Boras' sandbox isn't going to chase his players with phantom cash. Clubs have their own research departments, and they're going to form their own judgments on players and stick within a budget -- unless, of course, the Boras binder falls into the hands of the owner, who's so smitten by the contents that he steps in and big-foots the process.

"There was one instance where it proved to be a very, very important part of the team's consideration," Boras said. "The general manager gave it to the owner, and he looked at it and said, 'Wow, I didn't know this guy was that good.'"

Boras is selective in releasing the books, in part because he wants to make sure they don't fall into the hands of people with ulterior motives. A few years ago, the Boras agency was surprised to find a player's binder posted for sale online. The same free-market forces that prompt an owner to spend $254 million for Albert Pujols or lord-knows-what on Prince Fielder are bound to spur some enterprising, guerrilla capitalist from snaking the merchandise and shopping it to the highest bidder.

"It's like when people come to the ballpark and ask me to sign a ball on the sweet spot," Boras said. "I've done it, and then I see someone try to sell one on eBay."

If you think that's just super-agent bluster, we checked, and there are currently four Scott Boras-signed baseballs for sale on eBay, with one bid starting at $50. When a man spends most of his life pitching superstars, it's inevitable that he's going to become a bit of a commodity himself.

It's already been a productive postseason for Colby Lewis. Jaime Garcia is back home where he's most comfortable, and the wild-card Cardinals are back in a familiar win-or-go-home mode, heading into a mound rematch from Game 2.Three of Garcia's four postseason starts have been at Busch Stadium and the 25-year-old lefty has a 1.93 ERA at home. He outpitched Lewis in the first matchup with seven innings of scoreless, three-hit ball before the bullpen failed in a 2-1 loss.Garcia was in top form in Game 2 with seven strikeouts and one walk.

"It's been the same for me the last two months basically, and I'm still going to try to do the same thing. Don't change anything, don't try to do too much because this is the World Series. That's kind of how I feel," he said. Lewis beat the New York Yankees in the clinching Game 6 in the AL championship series last year. He doesn't mind being on the road, getting nine of his 14 wins with a 3.43 ERA, and has been stingy all postseason with a 2.95 ERA.Facing Lewis in Game 2, the Cardinals were limited to one run on four hits with one extra-base hit in 6 1/3 innings. Manager Ron Washington expects to see the same pitcher again, and is confident there'll be zero stage fright.

"He totally believes in what he's trying to do out there," Washington said. "He never gets away from what he does best. Colby never doubts what he's capable of doing, and I think that's what makes him apart from some guys at this stage."Garcia had plenty of must-win starts in September, steeling him for the postseason. The Cardinals overtook the faltering Braves on the final day of the season and Garcia was a key contributor, going 3-0 the final month.He doesn't plan on changing much from his Game 2 start.

"It doesn't matter which team, which lineup, what part of the season it is," Garcia said. "It's just going out there and worrying about the little things that you can control."The bigger question in La Russa's mind is what to expect from the lineup. The Cardinals were 1 for 12 with runners in scoring position in their 4-2 loss in Game 5 loss Monday night at Texas."Our confidence is very good that he's going to pitch well," manager Tony La Russa said. "And we're challenging our bats to do more."

La Russa twice declined discussing a potential Game 7 starter, although ace Chris Carpenter volunteered for duty on two days' rest. Carpenter, who allowed two runs in seven innings in Game 5, played catch Tuesday and said he felt fine."I think everybody's available for the rest of the year, don't you?" Carpenter said to reporters. "Whatever (La Russa) needs."Kyle Lohse would be on regular rest but has struggled in the postseason. Edwin Jackson allowed three runs in 5 1/3 innings, throwing 109 pitches in Game 3. Fifth starter Jake Westbrook is a fringe option, having worked just one inning in the postseason.

"There isn't any part of me that doesn't want to have a Game 7," La Russa said. Cardinals-Rangers Preview
Strolling behind the batting cage, Matt Holliday watched his St. Louis teammates hit away Friday and offered a simple tip."Get a good swing!" he hollered.Great advice for anyone with a Louisville Slugger in hand at this World Series.Despite the presence of Josh Hamilton, Albert Pujols, Nelson Cruz and other top boppers, the Cardinals and Texas Rangers have hardly dented the scoreboard while splitting the first two games.So far, a total of just eight runs. The last time there were fewer through the opening two games at a Series? Try 1950, when Joe DiMaggio and the New York Yankees combined with Philadelphia for four.

"A lot of people thought this was going to be an offensive World Series," Texas shortstop Elvis Andrus observed before an off-day workout.Blame the drought on a few factors: raw weather at Busch Stadium, good pitching and, perhaps most significantly, hitters facing arms they've never seen before.Both teams have flailed away at the plate, chasing sliders and curves that bounced, shattering bats and seeming to guess wrong on what pitches were coming next."We need to give good at-bats and get deeper and quit swinging at balls out of the strike zone," Mike Napoli said.Napoli has hit the lone home run of the Series. He connected off Chris Carpenter, but maybe he had an edge -- Napoli had been 3 for 3 lifetime against the Cardinals ace going into Game 1.

Fresh off their two-run rally in the ninth inning and a 2-1 win in Game 2, the Rangers start Matt Harrison on Saturday night at Rangers Ballpark. Kyle Lohse will pitch for the Cardinals."It's a tough place to pitch, especially when you see those flags blowing in. It usually means that jet stream is going to right-center," Lohse said. "I think everyone in the league knows that."Each team adds a designated hitter, with the AL rule in effect at Texas. Cardinals manager Tony La Russa will make Lance Berkman the DH and put Allen Craig -- already with a pair of key pinch-hit RBI singles -- in right field.The Rangers will likely use Michael Young at DH, move Napoli to first base and put Yorvit Torrealba at catcher.

At this point, it might take more than a wind tunnel to help the hitters.Texas is batting only .186, St. Louis is stuck at .203. Hamilton and Pujols are hitless, and Cruz has been held to a mere single after tearing through the AL championship series.On Friday, Cruz gave the Hall of Fame the bat he used to hit a grand slam in the ALCS. It was cracked -- maybe Texas and St. Louis need new timber, too.It seemed fitting, in fact, that when Texas scored those two runs Thursday night to even the Series, both crossed on sacrifice flies.

Each team has scored four runs overall. Back in 1983, Baltimore and Philadelphia also combined for eight through two games -- it's more than 60 years since the total was lower than this October."I think honestly we got out of our approach a little bit, maybe a little over aggressive trying to create things that necessarily weren't there," said Ian Kinsler, whose bloop single and daring steal keyed the Texas comeback. "If we can just relax and play our style of baseball, let the game come to us, we'll be all right."Rangers outfielder David Murphy hopes it plays out that way, eventually."It's the World Series. We're going to face a guy tomorrow that most of us have never faced, if at all. Game 4 is a little different because Edwin Jackson has been in the American League enough to where most of us have probably faced him," he said.

"I feel like just watching the first two games, offensively, it's just a matter of who is going to make adjustments on the fly. We're facing their guys that we've never before and it's the same thing on their side. The pitching performances have been good, but we have confidence in our offense to put up runs, as well," he said.So does Texas hitting coach Scott Coolbaugh. He was promoted from the Triple-A job when Thad Bosley was fired two months into his first year with the team.Coolbaugh watched Young swing through strike three from Jaime Garcia in Game 2, then saw Adrian Beltre wave at a couple of low off-speed deliveries."I think it was evident that some of our guys were seeing someone for the first time," Coolbaugh said. "You can watch all the video you want and read all the scouting reports. But when you step into that batter's box, it all looks different."Coolbaugh, however, was not surprised when the Rangers put together better at-bats in the ninth against Jason Motte and the St. Louis bullpen."That was two days in a row that we were seeing their relievers. The more we see them, the better off we'll be," he said.

It's a new weapon for St. Louis
Here are some of the players the National League has run out as designated hitters in the past decade: Greg Dobbs, Chris Coste, Ryan Spilborghs, Marlon Anderson, So Taguchi, Pedro Feliz, Tsuyoshi Shinjo, Shawon Dunston.Not exactly a who's who of dangerous sticks.For the first time since -- well, maybe ever -- the NL will have a decided edge in the games with the DH in play. Tony La Russa will use the DH to get Allen Craig into the lineup, with Craig likely playing right field and Lance Berkman slotting into the DH role.The Rangers, meanwhile, will use the DH to get Yorvit Torrealba into the lineup. Or Mitch Moreland. In Game 3, Torrealba will catch, Mike Napoli will move to first base and Michael Young will move from first to DH. Moreland has been struggling but could see a start at first base at some point.Here are the regular-season OPS numbers for the hitters in question:

Craig: .917
Torrealba: .705
Moreland: .733

Obviously, a huge advantage there goes to the Cardinals. But there's another reason the DH favors St. Louis. La Russa could slide David Freese to DH and play the defensively superior Daniel Descalso at third base. As Dave Cameron suggests on ESPN Insider, with left-handers Matt Harrison, Derek Holland and C.J. Wilson going, La Russa can still get Craig's bat in the lineup by playing him over the switch-hitting Berkman, who is much weaker from the right side. By doing that, La Russa improves his defense at third base and right field, while still keeping the strong right-handed bats of Freese and Craig in the lineup.

Doing so also offers a final edge: La Russa can use Berkman as a pinch hitter when the Rangers turn to one of their power righties out of the bullpen. Without having to worry about saving pinch hitters for his pitchers, La Russa could use Berkman to hit for one of his weak-hitting second basemen (Nick Punto or Ryan Theriot) or Descalso, preferably in a key situation with runners on base. Down by a run with the bases loaded in the fifth and Alexi Ogando coming in? Use Berkman to hit for Punto. If trailing in the game, Berkman can slide into right field and Craig to second or third.No matter what La Russa ultimately does (it appears Berkman will start Game 3), DH is another weapon for the Cards.

Deep Texas lineup becomes deeper
After two games of pitchers struggling to make contact and a slew of pinch hitters parading to home plate, the World Series shifts to Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. And that means the designated hitter is back in the lineup.That news disappoints C.J. Wilson, Texas' Game 5 starter, who loves to hit. But it doesn't upset the Rangers' coaching staff and front office. The Rangers won the American League West and disposed of Tampa Bay and Detroit thanks in large part to a deep lineup comfortable swinging the bats at home.Part of the reason for their success is having one of the top hitters in the AL in the past decade at DH.

Michael Young, who has played second base, third base and shortstop for the Rangers in his career, moved over to DH in 2011 when the club signed free agent third baseman Adrian Beltre. The move strengthened the offense but also helped the defense. Beltre has one of the best gloves at the hot corner in the big leagues, and his productive bat was used in the cleanup spot for most of the season. (He now is batting fifth behind Young and has been since he returned from the disabled list in September.)The addition of the DH for Games 3, 4 and 5 in Arlington allows manager Ron Washington some options. He can put both his catchers in the lineup, something he did at times during the 2011 season. The skipper is leaning toward that configuration in Game 3, putting Yorvit Torrealba behind the plate and Mike Napoli at first, while keeping Young's bat in the lineup at DH.

He also can put Young in the field and utilize the DH in other ways, if he chooses.It makes a deep lineup deeper and puts an important bat into the offensive mix in a ballpark that is primed for scoring runs.Having the DH means the bottom of the order is stronger. The Cardinals won't be able to pitch around guys lower in the order knowing the pitcher's spot is waiting for them. And Washington can insert his pitchers in the game and have more freedom to allow them to pitch longer if needed. In Busch Stadium, he wasn't able to get more than a few batters out of Alexi Ogando because the pitcher's spot in the order popped up and the manager needed to pinch hit. That won't be an issue in Texas.So by the simple shift of the series to the AL, the Rangers get to take better advantage of their deeper lineup. And they'll feel a lot more comfortable in the process.

Colby Lewis drops the hammer

ST. LOUIS -- Colby Lewis has never had the title of ace or been tabbed the No. 1. But there should be little debate that Lewis is the Texas Rangers' most trusted postseason starter.

He had his best stuff on display in a critical Game 2 on Thursday night against the St. Louis Cardinals and even though the win eluded him, Lewis' stellar 6 2/3 innings kept the stymied Rangers' offense against Jaime Garcia just one big inning away from gaining a split. It finally happened in the ninth with Lewis watching from the bench and leaving overly satisfied with a no-decision in the 2-1 Texas win.

"The biggest thing was trying to match zeroes and keep your team in the ballgame," Lewis said.Lewis left with two outs in the seventh inning in a near-identical situation to that of C.J. Wilson in Game 1. With two outs and David Freese on second, Lewis couldn't put away pesky Nick Punto with a two-strike count. Punto singled off a slider to put runners at the corners."That's probably one pitch I'd want back in that situation," Lewis said. "Especially in the seventh, late in the game."That guaranteed a pinch hitter for Garcia and ended Lewis' night after 96 pitches and fire still in his belly.

Out of the Cardinals dugout came Game 1 pinch-hit hero Allen Craig, who tagged Alexi Ogando for the go-ahead run. Rangers manager Ron Washington made the slow walk to the mound."I would have liked to stay out, but when Wash makes the decision, he makes the decision," Lewis said. "But it's strictly a managerial move and like I said, Ogando's been great and the bullpen's been outstanding this postseason." But, for the second consecutive night Craig got the best of Ogando, singling in the go-ahead run again for a 1-0 St. Louis lead, and suddenly Lewis was a candidate for a hard-luck loss.

"It's still just 1-0. Look at our lineup, it's just one pitch from tying up the ballgame, so I wasn't real concerned," Lewis said. "Yes, it's unfortunate that we went down late, but like you saw, we did the small things without the homer."Lewis had been the club's No. 3 starter in the first two rounds, giving him just one start in each series. But Washington decided to move Lewis up to Game 2 for the World Series. Washington downplays the notion that he has strategically lined up Lewis to pitch on the road, where his ERA during the regular season was more than two points lower than his home ERA and he had given the dreaded long ball far less frequently.

He kept everything in the park Thursday night, allowing only a third-inning, two-out double to Rafael Furcal, a fifth-inning single to Punto and then two singles in the seventh to Freese and a second one to Punto.The Texas starting rotation now has two quality starts under its belt in this postseason, and Lewis has both of them. This Game 2 gem iarguably goes down as the most determined effort of his career, challenging the eight innings he threw in the ALCS clincher last season to beat the Yankees."Colby is that type of player," right fielder Nelson Cruz said. "He did that last year in the playoffs and he's doing it again in the playoffs. He's been awesome for us."The win over the Yankees got the Rangers into the World Series. This one might have saved it.

Hurting Josh Hamilton lifts Texas

ST. LOUIS -- A full five and a half hours before the Texas Rangers would duct tape the mouths of a 47,000-plus Busch Stadium crowd and even this World Series, Ron Washington made a prediction.

It was the kind of prediction that could come back to haunt you like Jacob Marley, family vacation videos or six-alarm chili. And Washington didn't care.The topic was Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton, the 2010 AL MVP whose late-season groin strain had slowly sapped him of his power, mobility and, most of all, his ability to overtake a game. So the question was asked: Down 0-1, another chilly St. Louis night ahead, the possibility of resting his star for 2½ days … did Washington consider replacing Hamilton in the Rangers' Game 2 lineup.

"I can't afford to take Hamilton out of my lineup," the Texas manager said. "Even if Hamilton doesn't do anything, he makes a difference just with his presence in our lineup and I want his presence in it -- and it's in there tonight. Don't be surprised if he comes up big, because I certainly won't."And then the essentially one-legged Hamilton had a broken-bat groundout to short during his first inning at-bat. Then a nothing fly ball to left in the fourth inning. Then a wave of the arms on a swinging strikeout in the seventh.Come up big? After those three at-bats Thursday night and the O-fer he took the previous evening, it looked like ice skater Scott Hamilton had a better chance of getting a hit than Josh did.

Hamilton couldn't warm up properly. He couldn't make a check swing without the pain reverberating through his body like a tuning fork for the next 15 minutes. He couldn't "run or do anything" explosive. Otherwise, everything was great."Now I'm at the point, whatever," Hamilton said before the game. Then he added, "I'm not looking at it as a big deal."It wasn't a big deal. It was a HUGE deal. And Washington knew it, which is why he stuck his neck out from here back to Arlington, Texas.Don't be surprised if he comes up big, because I certainly won't.

So with no outs in the top of the ninth, Rangers on second and third, Texas trailing, 1-0, and Cardinals reliever Arthur Rhodes on the mound (the same former Ranger who had gotten Hamilton to fly out the night before), Hamilton stepped to the plate.One pitch later, the game was tied."Obviously, I faced him [Wednesday] night and he kept throwing me heaters up, heaters in," Hamilton said in a near-monotone, as though he were reciting a grocery list. "I was actually sitting first-pitch slider and just reacted, and that's a good thing sometimes -- just reacting instead of trying to make it happen. So that was it."

Hamilton's RBI-sacrifice fly was the first game-tying, ninth-inning sac fly in a World Series since 2005. Michael Young followed with another RBI-sac fly that put the Rangers ahead. And that's where they stayed. The Cardinals' home-field advantage is now neutralized. They were three outs away from a 2-0 Series lead, but all that changed with Hamilton's and Young's RBIs. Beginning Saturday evening, the next three games are at the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, where mittens and ski wear won't be needed. Who knows what happens next?"We played nine innings and tonight was proof of the type of team that we are," Washington said. "We've got a lot of character in that clubhouse."

Washington, who was second-guessed for his pinch-hitting choices in Texas' Game 1 loss, would have been criticized again had Hamilton not delivered in Game 2. Not that he cared."I know my player," he said. "Things are going around that Hamilton is dealing with some problems -- and he is -- but the nine guys that I put out there on the field tonight, those are the nine guys that got me here and we're going to deal with them through good times and bad times. If [Hamilton] tells me he can play, I'm putting him on the field. All I can say is I know my players better than you guys."

Hamilton wouldn't come right out and say it, but he didn't deny that his injured groin required a pregame painkilling injection. ("I plead the fifth," he said.) And he admitted that the injury forced him to take less-aggressive swings."Health-wise, it is what it is," he said. "I'm tired of talking about it. I'm going to hurt until the season is over. So it's a non-issue as far as talking about it. So stop asking me, please."

But how do you ignore the medical condition of the No. 3 hitter in the Rangers' batting order? How do you pretend Hamilton didn't walk into the visitor's clubhouse postgame dining spread wearing a huge bandage wrappred around his upper left thigh? You can't.Hamilton is 0-for-7 in this World Series and he hasn't hit a home run since Sept. 23. He isn't 100 percent healthy, not even close.But a ninth-inning fly ball to right changes everything. At least, for a few days it does.Without those two sacrifice flies, Texas, the World Series favorite, is down 0-2 and leaking tobacco spittle. Their two best starting pitchers (C.J. Wilson and Colby Lewis) would have losses. And remember their Game 3 starter, Matt Harrison, was last seen giving up seven runs and four dingers in the American League Championship Series.

"There was good karma in our dugout tonight," Washington said.It started hours earlier in a Busch Stadium interview room. Washington promised something big from Hamilton and he got it.And now we've got a Series.

The inning that changed everything

ST. LOUIS -- It was just one inning.Just one inning of a classic October baseball game.But just one inning is all it takes sometimes to change everything -- to rewrite all the storylines, to turn heartbreak into triumph, to take an entire World Series and turn it upside down.

So that's all this was -- just one inning. But after the stunning, historic turn of events in the ninth inning Thursday night at Busch Stadium, this World Series may never be quite the same.A bloop single fell to earth. … Two daring baserunning plays set up an epic comeback. … The great Albert Pujols let a baseball skip past his glove. … And you could almost feel the baseball earth shift in the blink of an eye.

Two humongous runs would score. … The Texas Rangers would find a way to win this game, 2-1, and tie this World Series, a game apiece. … And instead of tumbling into a 2-games-to-nada canyon that no team has climbed out of during the past three decades, the American League champions found themselves floating euphorically toward a plane ride home to Texas, trying to make sense of what had just happened.

It was only one inning. But it was an inning of baseball that shredded all the scripts we thought were unfolding in this fascinating 2011 World Series."That," said outfielder David Murphy, "was huge -- huge that we pulled this out. Going down, 2-0, in a series -- obviously, if you're that team that's down, 2-0, you don't want to look at statistics from the past. But I think the past will tell you that most teams that get out to that 2-0 lead will win the series."So that," Murphy would say one more time, "was huge -- not only to win this game but to shift the momentum in our favor."

OK, now that it's safe to look at those dreaded statistics from the past, we can tell David Murphy exactly how bleak the Rangers' picture would have appeared if that ninth inning hadn't turned out the way it did:No team has lost the first two games of any World Series on the road and come back to win the Series since Fernando Valenzuela's 1981 Dodgers. No team has lost the first two games of a World Series anyplace and come back to win it since Jim Leyritz's 1996 Yankees. And the past eight teams in a row that fell behind, 2-to-zippo, in the World Series have had their seasons end with somebody else spraying the champagne.

So that's what was on the line here as the bullpen door burst open in the ninth inning Thursday night, and the man Tony La Russa refuses to call "The Closer," Jason Motte, began jogging toward the mound.They've been playing these World Series games since 1903 now -- 618 of them to be exact, heading into this night. And in all that time, in all those games, only two teams had ever gone into the ninth inning on the wrong end of a 1-0 score and roared back to win.One of those teams was the 1985 Royals, who were three outs from losing the World Series to Joaquin Andujar's Cardinals until first-base ump Don Denkinger flashed that fateful "safe" sign.

The other was Home Run Baker's 1911 Philadelphia A's, who staged a shocking ninth-inning comeback against the legendary Christy Mathewson and went on to win in extra innings.And that's it. …Until Jason Motte finished his warmup tosses, Ian Kinsler wriggled into the batter's box and a remarkable inning of October baseball began to unfold.Kinsler may not be your classic leadoff man in many respects. He hit just .251, with a .336 on-base percentage, leading off innings in the regular season. And he batted only .146, with a .226 on-base percentage, in the ninth inning. But he did lead his team in pitches per plate appearance (3.94). And he's still a guy who inspires incredible trust from his teammates, especially in situations like this one.

"We feel great about him being up there," said Michael Young, "because we know he's going to throw up a good at-bat."And that's exactly what Kinsler gave them. He worked the count to 2-2, dunked a blooper into the Bermuda Triangle in short left-center and charged around first base, clapping his hands with the fury of a man who had the feeling he'd just kicked off something special.It may not have been the prettiest swing of Kinsler's career. In fact, it was a hit that Young would later describe as "your classic lawn dart." But you think the Rangers care that nobody would want to hang a photo of this hit in the Dallas Museum of Art? It was still a hit that sucked almost all the noise out of a rocking Busch Stadium, and started tumbling the dominoes in what was about to turn into a stunning inning.

Next up was Elvis Andrus. He was hitless in this World Series (0-for-6). He was just 8-for-45 (.177) in this postseason. And he was supposed to be up there to bunt. But never mind that bunting stuff because, on the third pitch he saw, Kinsler bolted for second.Kinsler's mad dash toward second base took only a couple of seconds. But to his teammates, it felt like a week. And as they watched Yadier Molina unleash one more laser beam across the diamond as Kinsler sprawled toward the bag headfirst, they weren't sure they would ever remember to breathe again."It was definitely hard to breathe there," Murphy said with a laugh. "Everybody knows how good a defensive catcher Molina is, and how well he throws. And that throw was right on the money. So there was definitely a sigh of relief. It was a great moment in the dugout. You've got to do little things like that to try and win games. And 'Kins' is a guy -- he's fearless out there."

If he was safe -- and Kinsler swore he was -- it was by maybe half the length of a fingernail. Asked how much he thought he'd been safe by, Kinsler summed it up in one word: "Enough."But once the second-base umpire, Ron Kulpa, gave the safe sign and Kinsler popped back onto his feet, spitting fire, it was hard not to have flashbacks to Dave Roberts' tide-changing steal of second back in Game 4 of the 2004 American League Championship Series.

And then it was Andrus' turn to change the World Series.He'd had trouble handling the bat through the entire month of October. But if Andrus was going to pick one moment in time to have his greatest at-bat of the postseason, this one worked just fine.He would foul off one two-strike, 98-mph flameball to stay alive. Two pitches later, he'd foul off another, this one at 95 mph.But then Motte tried to fool him with the first breaking ball of the at-bat. Andrus stroked it into a patch of open space in right-center. And Kinsler charged so far around third base, he drew a hard throw to the plate from center fielder Jon Jay.

Kinsler admitted later that he didn't make that monstrous turn to attract a throw. He was thinking only about "scoring that run right there." So when he caught the "stop" sign out of the corner of his eye, and saw Pujols moving to his left to cut off the throw, "it was a little scary," Kinsler said, thinking he might get "stranded out there."But somehow or other, Pujols never did cut off this throw. Either he never quite got to the spot, or Molina yelled at him to let the throw go through, because the baseball appeared to tick off Sir Albert's glove and skip slightly up the third-base line, where Molina ran it down.Exactly what happened on their end, we won't know for another day or so, because neither Pujols nor Molina made themselves available to the media after the game. But what we do know for sure is this:

The instant that throw hip-hopped past Pujols, Andrus restarted his engines and roared into second. And all of a sudden, the Rangers had two men in scoring position with nobody out.

Asked if he would have tried to make it to second if Pujols had cut the ball off, Andrus replied: "No. If he catches that ball, I would have stayed at first base. You've got to be smart."Yeah, you can never go wrong playing it smart, all right. And by playing it just smart enough to take those extra 90 feet, Andrus set up everything that happened next.First, La Russa strolled toward the mound to yank Motte, a man who had given up one hit to the first 28 hitters he'd faced in this postseason -- and then allowed two in a row to start this inning. The manager said later he never would have made that move if Andrus hadn't been standing on second base.So out went Motte, and in sauntered the ancient left-hander, 41-year-old Arthur Rhodes. It was La Russa's most debatable decision of a brilliant postseason. But he made it, he said, because he didn't want Hamilton to see fastballs in this spot and because "if you're thinking about how can you get an out and maybe not have [Andrus] go from second to third, I thought the left-hander had a better chance."

But this was where La Russian logic and reality went their separate ways. Rhodes hung a first-pitch slider. Hamilton lofted it to right. And not only did Kinsler score, but Andrus raced another 90 feet to third base, with just one out.And that was where Albert Pujols' botched cutoff throw really left its mark -- "because it gave Josh the opportunity to get Elvis to third," Young said. "When Josh hit that ball, I'm sure most people were thinking, 'Sacrifice fly,' but the big thing was to get that runner to third. And that was really Josh's goal -- to get that guy to third."Once Andrus pulled into third and Young headed for the plate, La Russa had one more ill-fated move left in him. He waved for his new favorite right-handed power arm, Lance Lynn, hoping for a strikeout. Instead, Lynn went 3-and-0 on Young, worked the count back to 3-2, and rubbed up the baseball one more time.

Young stepped out of the box, took one last giant gulp of oxygen, tapped home plate twice and waggled his bat back and forth. Lynn rocked, fired and left a breaking ball out over the plate. Young lifted it into deep right-center, where Jay ran it down but had no play at all at the plate. So Andrus loped home. And shock waves rippled through a disbelieving stadium.It was just one inning. Just one span of four batters in a game in which 69 men headed for the batter's box. But it's incredible how much can change in just one inning.

An October hero turned into the losing pitcher. … A manager who spent three weeks looking as though he could do no wrong might have overmanaged himself into trouble. … And a baseball team on the precipice of a second straight World Series disaster suddenly found itself in a whole different place -- back even in this Series, heading home and riding the wave of one of the epic comebacks in Fall Classic history."It's the World Series," Kinsler said. "Last two teams. Every victory is huge.""That's what the postseason is all about," said starting pitcher Colby Lewis, whose 6 2/3 brilliant innings were trampled into "oh by the way" material by that ninth inning. "It was exciting, man. It gives me goosebumps now, just talking about it."

But in this case, those goosebumps might be sticking around for a long, long time. As Lewis' teammates knotted up their ties and headed for the airport and a beautiful ride home, it felt like merely a gigantic game to win. But one of these days, when those Texas Rangers get a chance to reflect on what just happened on this remarkable evening, it is going to hit them all what really transpired here.It was just one inning, which turned into a once-in-a-generation comeback tale for the ages.But for now, they're just a little too busy trying to win a World Series to appreciate that.

Albert Pujols and Josh Hamilton in a matchup of MVP sluggers. Nelson Cruz and David Freese becoming bigger names with each home run swing. Pitching staffs full of shaky starters and shutdown relievers.Plus a Rally Squirrel and the Claw.The Texas Rangers and St. Louis Cardinals, with a lot of symmetry, are all set to get acquainted in the World Series.Leave it to ol' Arthur Rhodes to make the introductions. The 41-year-old lefty specialist began the year with Texas, wound up in St. Louis and is likely to get a ring either way.

Besides, it takes someone who's been around a bit to remember the last time these teams played.

It was 2004, in a three-game set in Texas. Even in this era of interleague play, that's the only time the Cardinals and Rangers have met when it meant something. According to STATS LLC, that matches the fewest games between a pair of opponents in the majors, tying Mets-White Sox.Game 1 is Wednesday night in St. Louis, with aces Chris Carpenter of the Cardinals and C.J. Wilson set to start. The opening odds see Texas as a small favorite."The Rangers are scary. They're a scary team," said Freese, the NLCS MVP. "You look at that lineup, you look at that staff. It's going to be a battle."

"I think we're a team that can match up with them a little bit. And they're confident, we're confident. It's been a tough road. I've definitely been watching the ALCS for sure. That's some good ball over there," he said. Consider this an old-school World Series: top names on both sides, many of them facing each other for the first time -- the way it was before AL and NL clubs began playing each other all through the summer.Think of Ted Williams vs. Stan Musial, maybe.Musial, in fact, might even be at the ballpark next week. The 90-year Hall of Famer who helped the Cardinals win three World Series crowns was at Busch Stadium during the playoffs for pregame ceremonies.

Stan the Man and the Cardinals beat Williams and the Red Sox in the 1946 Series. More than a quarter-century later, Williams became the first manager in Texas history after the franchise moved from Washington. It took a lot longer for Texas to finally reach the Series. Hamilton, Cruz, Michael Young and the Rangers made their first appearance last year, only to get shut down by San Francisco's pitching in a five-game wipeout."We weren't very happy with the results, and we certainly knew that we were a better team than we showed," manager Ron Washington said.

The Series shifts to Arlington for Game 3 next Saturday. The next day, there will be a doubleheader in Texas, of sorts -- St. Louis Rams at Dallas Cowboys, then Cardinals at Rangers.St. Louis has won 10 Series titles, second most to the New York Yankees' 27. Manager Tony La Russa, Pujols and the Cardinals last took it in 2006, helped by Series MVP David Eckstein.This year, hardly anyone expected St. Louis to make it this far, especially when it was 10 1/2 games out of a playoff spot on Aug. 25. A sensational run in the last month, plus a tremendous collapse by Atlanta, gave the Cardinals the NL wild-card slot on the final day of the regular season.

The Cardinals did what many fans considered almost impossible in the first round -- they eliminated the heavily favored Phillies. Carpenter outdueled Roy Halladay 1-0 in the decisive Game 5, then St. Louis relied on its bullpen every day to beat Milwaukee in the NL championship series.Jason Motte, Fernando Salas, Octavio Dotel, Marc Rzepczynski and the Cards' crew shut down Prince Fielder and the Brewers, capped by a 12-6 win in Game 6 Sunday night.A resurgent Lance Berkman, Matt Holliday and the emerging Freese got a boost in the lineup from trade-deadline addition Rafael Furcal, one of several moves by general manager John Mozeliak that worked out well.

The Cardinals also got help -- some might believe -- from a squirrel that scampered right in front of home plate during a playoff game in St. Louis.The Rangers powered to the AL West title this year and hope to show the Claw, their hand signal for big hits, a lot starting this week.Texas began the playoffs by beating Tampa Bay in four games and mashed Detroit in the six-game ALCS. Cruz was an MVP monster against the Tigers, hitting an LCS-record six home runs with 13 RBIs.Closer Neftali Feliz, Alexi Ogando, Scott Feldman and two of GM Jon Daniels' additions -- Mike Adams and Michael Gonzalez -- keyed a bullpen that dominated the postseason.

Now it's on to Busch Stadium for the opener. The NL holds home-field advantage this year because it won the All-Star game, with Fielder's homer off Wilson the big hit. The weather forecast calls for clear skies, a welcome relief in a postseason dotted by rain.And, oh, about those previous Cardinals-Rangers games. St. Louis won two of three in June 2004, with the Cardinals' lone loss coming when Young and Texas hammered Carpenter.Carpenter will see a packed Texas lineup, including Young, in the opener."I haven't thought a lick about it," Carpenter said after Sunday night's clincher. The St. Louis Cardinals' remarkable late-season run wasn't enough to catch the NL Central champion Milwaukee Brewers.

With the Cardinals winning the last two games of the best-of-seven NL championship series, however, it's the Brewers who are now playing catch-up.

Right-hander Kyle Lohse gets the ball for the first time in 12 days Thursday night when the host Cardinals try to build a commanding 3-1 series lead and extend the Brewers' road playoff woes.

Trailing Atlanta by 10 1/2 games on Aug. 25, the Cardinals finished 23-9 and clinched the wild card on the final day of the regular season with a victory at Houston and a Braves' loss to Philadelphia.

As improbable as St. Louis' charge was, the Cardinals fell short of catching Milwaukee, which clinched its first division title since 1982 on Sept. 23 after defeating Florida and watching St. Louis lose at home to the Chicago Cubs that night on the Miller Park scoreboard.

But now the Cardinals hold the upper-hand against their division rival, and there would be no trip back to Milwaukee if they can win Games 4 and 5.

"We have battled for the last two months or however long it's been," Game 3 winner Chris Carpenter said. "We have nothing to lose."

St. Louis, two victories from its first World Series appearance since winning it all in 2006, will give the ball to Lohse for the first time since he was tagged for six runs and seven hits in an 11-6 Game 1 loss at Philadelphia on Oct. 1.

The right-hander retired the first 10 batters he faced, but he yielded five sixth-inning runs.

"What it boiled it down to, I missed with two changeups all night and both ended up with homers," said Lohse, who went 6-1 with a 3.23 ERA in his final 10 regular-season starts.

Despite not pitching since the Cardinals' playoff opener, Lohse has tried to stay sharp by throwing on flat ground. Getting the ball following an extended break is nothing new for the right-hander, who made three starts this season on at least eight days' rest.

The last time came Sept. 6, when Lohse, pitching for the first time in nine days, tossed six innings of shutout ball in a 4-2 home win over Milwaukee.

Lohse is 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA in his last three starts at Busch Stadium.

That doesn't bode well for a Brewers team 0-3 away from Miller Park this postseason. Milwaukee is winless in its last eight playoff road games since a 10-0 victory over St. Louis in Game 1 of the 1982 World Series.

"We're going to prepare ourselves just like we've been doing and expect to win tomorrow and hopefully get off to a good start," Brewers MVP candidate Ryan Braun said.

Milwaukee, though, is batting .211 with 3.3 runs per game on the road during the playoffs after failing to get a hit in the final five innings Wednesday.

St. Louis' bullpen threw four perfect frames, with Jason Motte getting the save by striking out three of the last four Brewers.

"When that phone rings (in the bullpen), we're ready to go," Motte said.

So is Game 4 starter Randy Wolf, who will try to rebound from one of his worst outings of the year.

Making his first start in eight days, and third in the playoffs, the Brewers left-hander surrendered a season high-tying seven runs over three innings of a 10-6 Game 4 loss at Arizona on Oct. 5.

"I think that you have to have a short memory and you have to learn from it, and you can't beat yourself up over it too badly," he said.

Wolf is 2-0 with a 1.13 ERA in his last two starts at Busch -- both coming since Aug. 10 -- but after giving up five first-inning runs in his division series start, manager Ron Roenicke might not have much patience if he struggles early.

The Cardinals have scored six first-inning runs in the last two contests.

"When you make mistakes like we did the first inning, they're going to get their hits, they're going to score some runs," Roenicke said.

Albert Pujols, who had an RBI double in the Cardinals' four-run first inning Wednesday, finished 2 for 2 with two walks and is batting .636 (7 for 11) with four doubles, a homer and six RBIs in the series.

Braun is batting .483 (14 for 29) with two homers and eight RBIs this postseason.

The Texas Rangers are one victory away from returning to the World Series for the second straight season. All they must do is once again get past Justin Verlander to accomplish that feat.

Coming off another extra-inning victory, the Rangers can clinch the AL pennant Thursday with a win over the Detroit Tigers in Game 5 of the AL championship series at Comerica Park.

After allowing Detroit to get back in the series with a 5-2 loss in Game 3 on Tuesday, Texas posted its second 11-inning victory of the ALCS, 7-3 on Wednesday to take a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series. That contest was delayed 2 hours and 13 minutes because of rain.

"If you don't like baseball, you probably like it now watching these games," said Rangers catcher Mike Napoli, who drove home the go-ahead run in the 11th. "We expected a tough series, and we've been able to come out on top. And it's been fun."

Following Napoli's tiebreaking single, Nelson Cruz hit his second 11th-inning homer of the series -- a three-run shot to help put the Rangers one win away from becoming the first AL team to reach the World Series in consecutive seasons since the New York Yankees made four straight trips from 1998-2001.

"Real good team," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said of the Rangers. "And so far they've gotten the best of (us). Obviously, we've got to win (Thursday)."

Cruz, who has hit all four of Texas' ALCS home runs, connected for the first game-ending grand slam in postseason history in the Rangers' 7-3, 11-inning victory in Game 2. The first player in major league history to hit two extra-inning home runs in the same postseason series, Cruz is 5 for 14 with nine RBIs in the ALCS after going 1 for 15 versus Tampa Bay in the division series.

He also threw out Miguel Cabrera at the plate as the potential go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth Wednesday.

"He's capable of doing exactly what he's doing," Texas manager Ron Washington said of Cruz. "I'm just happy that we as the Texas Rangers are reaping the benefit of it."

Cruz homered off Verlander in Texas' 3-2 win in Game 1 for only his second hit in 11 career at-bats against the likely AL Cy Young Award winner.

Though Verlander won 24 games and led the AL in ERA (2.40) and strikeouts (250), he is 1-1 with a 5.54 ERA in three postseason starts. However, the right-hander will not put any more pressure on the himself than there obviously is with his team facing elimination.

"I have to go out there and pitch better than I have and really establish a rhythm from the get-go and maintain my feel throughout the game," he said.

Verlander has struggled to find a solid rhythm because two of his three playoff starts have been interrupted by rain, including Game 1 on Saturday when he allowed three runs in four innings against the Rangers.

Despite rain again being forecast Thursday, Verlander is not worried about the weather or his subpar performance thus far in the postseason.

"I feel good," Verlander said. "It's just a matter of getting my mechanics right. I've done everything I can possibly do to get myself prepared. Now it's a matter of going out there and doing it."

Scheduled Texas starter C.J. Wilson (0-1, 7.45) allowed six hits and walked five but yielded just two runs in 4 2/3 innings against Verlander in Game 1. The left-hander returned after the first of two rain delays in that contest and was not very sharp.

He's not going to concern himself about the potential for rain interrupting this outing.

"There's no point of talking about it before it happens," Wilson said. "Nothing is regular at this point. There's no regular starts in the postseason. There's no regular routine."

Miguel Cabrera, 2 for 6 with a double versus Wilson, drove in two runs Wednesday for the Tigers, who managed five hits one night after pounding out a postseason-high 11 in their Game 3 victory.

Cabrera is 5 for 14 with three doubles, a home run and four RBIs in the series.
